Every big purchase eventually comes down to one honest question: what exactly am I getting for the extra money. With pre-orders opening October 16 and sales starting October 23, that question is about to land on a lot of Indian credit card statements, because the iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro decision isn’t really about which phone is better. It’s about whether a fold is worth giving up a camera lens for.
Apple’s first foldable starts at Rs 2,99,900 in India for 256GB, with a Rs 7,000 instant cashback bringing it closer to Rs 2,92,900 on some cards. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at Rs 1,64,900. That’s a gap of roughly Rs 1.35 lakh, enough to buy a second phone outright, and the Duo isn’t simply the Pro with a hinge bolted on. It trades away pieces of it to make the fold possible.
The camera is where the trade-off actually hurts
Both phones run Apple’s A20 Pro chip, so in the iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro matchup, raw processing power isn’t the story here. The story is the back of the phone. The iPhone 18 Pro keeps a 48MP telephoto lens offering genuine 4x optical zoom and a variable aperture that opens from f/1.4 to f/4.0. The Duo has no telephoto lens at all. Its main 48MP camera does a 2x “optical-quality” crop instead, which is a clever piece of software engineering, but it is not the same as a dedicated zoom lens, and it never will be.
The front camera tells a similar story. The Pro’s selfie camera is 18MP; the Duo’s is 12MP. None of this makes the Duo a bad camera phone. It makes it a phone where you’re paying flagship-plus money for a camera system one tier below the Pro’s.
What else quietly disappears
The missing telephoto lens gets most of the attention, but it isn’t alone. Buyers moving from a Pro model should know the full list before they fall in love with the folding screen:
- Face ID: gone, replaced by Touch ID built into the side button
- LiDAR Scanner: not included, which matters if you use AR apps or rely on it for low-light autofocus
- Variable aperture: the Duo’s main camera is fixed at f/1.6, where the Pro can open up to f/1.4
- ProRes and ProRAW: unsupported on the Duo, along with ACES, Apple Log 2 and Genlock, features working videographers actually use
- Spatial photos and video: not available on the Duo’s cameras
Some of this is physics, not laziness. Apple’s own reviewers note it’s genuinely difficult to fit a long-range telephoto module into a phone that still needs to fold flat. That’s a legitimate engineering constraint. It’s also exactly the kind of fine print that’s easy to miss when a salesperson is showing you how the inner screen unfolds.
What the extra money does buy you
None of this means the Duo is a bad phone, or that the iPhone 18 Pro quietly wins on every count. The Duo’s 7.6-inch inner display next to a 5.4-inch cover screen is a genuinely different way to use a phone, good for reading, for split-screen multitasking in iOS 27, for anyone who has ever wished their phone were briefly a small tablet. Battery life holds up too, with Apple rating the inner display for up to 31 hours of video playback and the cover display for up to 44 hours, backed by a dual-battery system no standard iPhone has ever had.
The chip itself is also newer than what ships in the iPhone 17 Pro Max, still selling off remaining stock at a steep discount to the Duo. Build quality hasn’t been compromised either: Grade 5 titanium, Ceramic Shield 2, and IP68 water resistance, in a body that happens to fold.
iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro: who should actually buy which
Strip away the marketing and the iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro choice comes down to how you actually use a phone’s camera. If you photograph school plays from the back row, if you shoot video for work, or if Face ID’s convenience is non-negotiable for you, the Pro remains the smarter Rs 1.35 lakh cheaper buy, not a consolation prize. If what you want is a phone that becomes a small tablet on demand, and you can live with a 2x crop zoom and a thumbprint instead of a glance, the fold earns its premium on its own terms.
What nobody should do is buy the Duo assuming it’s simply a Pro Max with an extra hinge. It isn’t. It’s a different set of trade-offs wearing the same logo, priced at a level where “I didn’t realize I was giving that up” is an expensive sentence to say out loud in an Apple Store three weeks after sale day.
